Japanese Aircraft Online Model Contest 009 - MIKHAIL AGEENKO

Here is my Kawasaki Ki-61 "Hien" Type I Tei, 1/72 Hasegawa with Aeromaster decal, 56th Shinbu-tai, flown by 2nd Lt. Suzuki Shigeyuki (from Chiba), May 25, 1945, Chiran Air Base, Kagoshima prefecture.
The unit emblem on the tail is a stylised 56, and Suzuki’s name is on the nose in white.

  1. Nice little model! There are a couple of things that stand out to me: The first is that it's too shiny, not the weathered finish you expect given all the chipping. Second is the IFF stripes, they should be of constant thickness. (I have seen a lot of people get this wrong.) Lastly, the prop tip stripes are missing.
Otherwise, it's a reasonable looking build. Dull down the finish, fix the IFF stripes, and add the warning stripes to the prop, and it will look even better. 6.

  2. Hi!

Model was completed many-many years ago (15-17 or so), so many errors were made...
IFF stripes are decals from FineMolds kit.

  3. Mikhail,
I understand. No doubt I wouldn't have done much better back then either. I have learned quite a bit in recent years when it comes to Japanese aircraft.
I wouldn't mind seeing some of you more recent work.

  4. I am working currently on 1/72 Aoshima George and hope will be able to complete it in time to next contest.

  5. Very nice work considering the age of the model. A strong 7 from me (if we were allowed to use decimals I would give it a 7.5).

  6. I'd also rate it a 7. It looks like a nice out-of-the box build with a great effort on chipping and the warning lines, although they would probably be red? In the front view it is apparent that without aftermarket items a model may look a bit clumsy particularly in 1/72 (undercarriage, wheel doors etc.)

  7. Warning lines Red for silver and yellow for green, I believe.

  8. Not sure Mike. Green Ki-61 were field-camouflaged, hence they most likely repainted the warning lines in red. Olive-brown factory painted Ki-100 had yellow lines. But maybe it depended on colours available.

  9. Since this one is Tei version, I have assumed that it was factory painted.
It may seems green, but the color is so-called (by Gunze) Kawasaki Green that used to depict # 7 paint back then.

  10. I like it a lot. There are the problems with the iff stripes (understandably not your fault) and the scratches around the cockpit look too excessive. Also too clean, no exhaust dirt, faded colors etc considering this is a well flown aircraft. Good overall effort in a small scale though so it's a 6 from me.

Would you like guys to see a special on warnings and other pannel lines of various Japanese a/c?

  11. "Would you like guys to see a special on warnings and other panel lines of various Japanese a/c?"

Absolutely. I have some photocopies pages of "Japanese Army Air Force Camouflage and Markings: by Thorpe and you did a great post about IFF stripes in the past which I still refer to, but I have not seen anything else on the topic. I would like to know more about such things as warning labels, combat stripes and propeller colors and markings (yellow tips, yellow stripes at the tips, yellow stripes at the tips AND near the spinner, etc.).

    Yes, very much so.

  14. Nice finish! But she looks a little odd to me because of the extensive weathering around the cockpit area and her very glossy overall appearance. 6.5!
