"Toraware no Nihonki" #2

In this second set, again from the San Diego Air & Space Museum Archives, we can see some of the aircraft being transported "on board USS Barnes (CVE-20) during its transit to Norfolk via Alameda and the Panama Canal.".

photo #9

In the photos above we can see another "Tokai" and another "Dinah" positioned in front of aircraft number #13. The "Tokai" will be a/c number 26 and the "Dinah" number 25. The "Suisei", positioned in front of a/c number #9 has a white "26" painted on the fuselage side and, interestingly, a star painted over the hinomaru. It is a/c number 28. Behind it is another "Suisei" which will be a/c number 27.

More of the same a/c as seen in the two photos above. Some have their canopies covered.

17. Kawasaki Ki-45 "Toryu"
18. Kawasaki Ki-48 "Lily"
19. Kawanishi N1K2-J "Shiden-kai"
20. Nakajima C6N "Saiun"
21. Nakajima C6N "Saiun"
22. Nakajima J1N1 "Gekko"
23. Mitsubishi Ki-46-III "Dinah"

You mentioned that a/c #20 & #21 are Nakajima C6N "Saiun", not B6N. Nevertheless note that the air intake under the fuselage is on the starboard side, not on the port as it should be. Could it be that this photo is actually in reverse? Makes more sense if the photographer was on the island of the aircraft carrier.

  2. Great pictures. On the last one, on the left sides of the "Lily" and the "Toryu" are two Nakajima C6N1 "Myrt" - note the 3 bladed prop (the B6N was 4 blades).

  4. On the last photo we can see two C6N "Saiun", not B6N. And there is no Ki-45 on top photo. It is J5N "Tenrai".

  6. Yes, the last picture is reversed. The Toryu's hood should open to the starboard side as seen on your mirror copy.

  7. Number 9 from the main photo looks more like ZERO to me.
