Tamiya 1/48 A6M3 Model 22 Ko by Woody Kubacki

The kit was painted with AK Real Color and Mr Color paints, and the Honomaru and fuselage stripes were hand masked. Oils and panel line washes were used to weather the model.  There are some errors (no arrestor hook and interior of canopy is painted the wrong colour), which I would like to remedy in a future build, but I am happy with how it turned out.

An excellent model indeed. It's rare to see a properly weathered Zero where the red brown primer is seen under the top paint. Good job Woody!

Beautiful model of the most handsome of all Rei-sen. I like the way the cowling is weathered.

  2. really nice job with the weathering, what would be the correct color for the canopy interior color? Is it a land base aircraft? they may have remove the hook for weight savings.

  3. Hi Bob,

It should be black, as far as I can tell (and I think that's what the Tamiya instructions state). I believe the hook was retained because being at the extreme end of the aircraft, removing it would affect the aircraft's balance and counterweight would have to be added.

  4. Hi Woody,
Just an update on the arrester hook. I just finished reading Monographs Mitsubishi A6M Reisen (Zeke) Vol 1, and on the next to last page it stated that all land based IJN navel fighters had the hook removed to save weight. Being a commercial pilot myself I would have though that this would effect the WB also, but I believe that USN aircraft also removed there hooks when land based.
