We continue today with more photos from the "Asahi Shimbun" collection, this time featuring a Mitsubishi G3M3 "Nell" bomber.
The photos share the same caption and it says:
KAVIENG, PAPUA NEW GUINEA - JUNE 01: local residents surround the Imperial Japanese Navy fighter aircraft as the airport construction completed circa June 1942 in Kavieng, New Ireland Island, Papua New Guinea. This Type 96 Rikko (G3M) would have had the tail code P-902 signifying a transport with the 11th Air Fleet Headquarters Squadron.
Thanks for adding the detail Darryl, I was hoping someone would chime in with unit identification.
I wish there were more blueprints and good info widely available on the Nell and her civilian sister (especially the Nippon-go) besides the Bunrindo book, I would love to try to do a 3D Model of her but I'm a stickler for detail!
