Mitsubishi Ki-51 "Sonia", unidentified unit markings 九九軍偵, 分からない部隊マーク

九九軍偵の尾翼マークからどんな部隊か分かりますか?
Can you identify the units of these "Sonias" with the undocumented tail markings?

The location in the photo above, is said to be the Kanemaruhara Airfield in Tochigi Prefecture. Note that the aircraft next to the second from the left with a tail marking or fifth from the front, has the very old style canopy that opened sideways. 場所は金丸原飛行場です。

"Rising Decals" has included decals for the previous badly destroyed Ki-51 in its "Unknown and Less Known Units" set.

Mitsubishi Ki-51 "Sonia" In Action, tokkotai/shimbutai (special attack units) 九九軍偵, 特攻隊/振武隊, 大村 - video

ビデオの軍偵の部隊わかりますか?
尾翼の漢字は何書いているだろう?
A short color (not colorized) video, shot at Omura airfield in Nagasaki Prefecture after the end of the War, features a Mitsubishi Ki-51 "Sonia" of an unknown unit. The skull and crossbones tail marking or similar patterns were common among tokko units.
A photo of another "Sonia" from the same unit can be found in our Eagle Eye #1, p.55.
"Rising Decals" has included decals for an aircraft of this unit in their set "Flight of no return" in 1/72.

Mitsubishi Ki-51 "Sonia" In Action in China 1944, 九九軍偵 一号作戦, 長沙衡陽作戦 - video

From April 1944 until December of the same year, the IJA launched "Operation Ichi-Go" with the main goal to capture air bases in southeast China from which American bombers were attacking the Japanese homeland and shipping. A part of this operation was the Campaign of Changsha-Hengyang during which the attached video, dated July 6, 1944, from the NHK collection was shot.
It features a flight of Mitsubishi Ki-51 Assault Aircraft flying over the Chinese mainland with the narator explaining that they take part in the Battle of Changsha.
Three "Sonia" equipped IJAAf units took part in this operation; the 6th Sentai, the 44th Sentai and the 54th Dokuritsu Chutai (Independent Company).

A tail marking is no visible on this aircraft so we can't say with certainty which unit it belonged to. Prior to and in preparation for the operation, the 5th Air Army responsible for the air operations at that time and place, was receiving 50 aircraft per month and the flight crews in China had to go to Japan to fly them back to their Chinese bases. So, perhaps what we see in the video are newly arrived aircraft on a training flight over China just before the begining of the "Ichi-Go Operation".

The 54th Sentai used a small hinomaru for its tail marking, so perhaps the "Sonias" in the video belonged to that unit.

The NHK collection includes a second video featuring Mitsubishi Ki-51 "Sonia" active during the "Operation Ichi-Go", and more specifically, the Changsha-Hengyang Campaign, and this one is dated August 3, 1944.
The three "Sonia" equipped IJAAf units, the 6th Sentai with 18 Ki-51s, the 44th Sentai with 11 Ki-51s and 14 Tachikawa Ki-36s "Ida" as well as the 54th Dokuritsu Chutai (Independent Company) with about a dozen aircraft (mixed Ki-51s and Ki-36s?), formed the Provisional Air Units within the 5th Air Army. They were based in Pailochi airfield (present-day Bailuqi?), northeast of Yueyang, and Xiangtan Airfield and
"they were assigned the mission of cooperating directly with the Eleventh Army. They did cooperate closely with the front line divisions in locating the enemy and also acted as liaison between the different ground units during the intervals between enemy attacks.
At first the Provisional Air Unit used Puchi and Pailochi airfields but, with the development of the operation, it advanced to Changsha and Xiangtan. As soon as the Army occupied Hengyang airfield, the Air Unit, disregarding the strong enemy resistance still in the streets of Hengyang and the fact that the field was still under enemy fire, landed and closely cooperated with the Army in the battle of Hengyang.
At all times, this air unit advanced to airfields as close to the front line as possible and closely cooperated with ground operations."

In the clip the Ki-51s do not seem to have any clear unit markings but small hinomarus on the tail are sometimes barely visible. If this is true then this would mean that they belong to the 44th Sentai.
In the background we can probably see Dongting Lake and this would mean that the planes in the clip were operating from Pailochi Airfield.

Mitsubishi Ki-51 "Sonia" by Danilo Renzulli

Here's a review of my 1/72 Mitsubishi Ki-51 by Clear Prop.
When I opened the box at first I had a very good impression - a lot of pieces, very sharp, very well executed surface details and the impression of a model with no assembly problems - the kit includes a p/e fret and a vinyl set of masks. Impressive is the amount of microscopic and very sharp small pieces, as small as a photoetched parts.
The problems arose once the stubb and all the interior details were fixed and assembled, the stubb couldn't be squeezed in the two fuselage halves! So begun a long filing, sanding , milling and dry-fitting session. Once fixed this not welcome problem I could proceed to cement the two fuselage halves, wings and all the other components- the fitting of all this parts revealed to be perfect.
I decided to paint this model in a typical tropical camouflage scheme from a few well known pictures, although unknown is the unit this subject belonged to. For the the overall hairyokushoku I used a mixture of colours by Mr.Color paints as well as for the green "worms". Painting the "worms" has been a bit difficult since I was supposed to have more practice with my new Harder & Steenbeck airbrush- considering my ability level I can almost be satisfied...
The unit emblem on the tail is from Kora Models decal sheet, while the hinomaru have been airbrushed with Maketar masks. I made the small masks to airbrush the red rhombus around the wing guns. A few p/e details have been added from the provided sheet while I rebuilt the typical pitot tube on the wing with micro brass pipes .
In the end this kit turned into a nice model with very fine surface details.

Nakajima Ki-43 "Hayabusa" - 59 & 248 Sentai pt.5

Let's begin today with a "new" discovery I made in the old FAOW #65, p.75 where the markings of the 59 Sentai are discussed. A photo is featured of an intact combat (not damaged or captured) aircraft, where the band in the horizontal surfaces is clear beyond any doubt. The photo (Haya21) was taken in Bandoeng (present-day Bandung) airfield, Java, in July 1942. Note the absence of fuselage hinomaru.
According to the caption, this band was applied to ease recognition during air battles. I believe this photo proves beyond any doubt that the unit used this band as an additional recognition marking.
The great Watanabe Rikyu illustrated Nango's "Hayabusa" accordingly (Haya22).
Thank you very much Ed DeKiep for pointing out this very interesting detail and instigating this research. Appreciated.

There are two photos (Haya23 & 24) in the AWM collection of a different 59 Sentai "Hayabusa"...

...another photo (Haya25) of a much more heavily wrecked aircraft.

and another one (Haya26).

Moving on, I would like to present another photo (Haya27) I discovered on-line of Capt Matsuo's "Hayabusa".

And another (Haya28) showing the two aircraft in the famous colour photos.

Yet another on-line photo (Haya29), shows the whole setting of the deplayed captured aircraft from a different angle revealing some interesting details.
The "Hayabusa" on the right side of the "Sonia", belongs to the 248 Sentai. More about the unit etc, here.
It is the same aircraft seen in this photo (Haya30).

The serial number is visible and is "5894" (is it a "9"?). Note the very light camouflage.

The "Sonia" in the foreground is this one, here.
Here's another photo (Sonia1) I recently discovered on the net. Note two more "Hayabusa" in the background.

IJAAF & IJNAF wrecked aircraft #53 - Mitsubishi Ki-46 "Dinah" pt.2 - video

Here's another video, from HERE, showing more of the "Dinah" cockpit, this time the pilot's area.

The video starts with a Kawasaki Ki-45-Kai-Koh "Toryu" (Nick) in the background. The tail marking is unfortunately not visible. Note the overall brown aircraft next to it, probably another "Nick". Of particular interest is the fuselage hinomaru with what looks like a yellow surround. Compare the hinomaru surround with the white fuselage band. Hinomaru with yellow surround are considered to be "myths" born from badly developed photos etc etc.
Just to be clear. I'm not saying that the fuselage hinomaru has a yellow surround. I'm saying that it looks like it. Could be white paint that has darkened with age or dirt. Or it is indeed yellow. Personally, I don't know.

The rest of the stills show the cockpit interior of the "Dinah" of the previous post.

Mitsubishi Ki-51 "Sonia" - 27 Sentai & Mitsubishi Ki-21 "Sally" - 12 Sentai - video

Another video today from the NHK Collection, dated December 2, 1941, featuring Mitsubishi Ki-51 "Sonias" from the 27th Sentai and Mitsubishi Ki-21 "Sallys" from the 12th Sentai.

According to the narrator, the "Kitajima butai" (12th Sentai, Col Kitajima Kumao was the unit commander) and the "Sakurai butai" (27 Sentai, Col Sakurai Hajime) attacked Fengchuan (present-day Fengkai County) and Nanxiong on November 28.

It's a rather obscure operation, I couldn't find anything about it in the unit histories. But Monograph #76 mentions:

"With the successful conclusion of the Chungyuan Operation, the Fifth Air Operation (also known as Operation No. 102) was launched at the beginning of August. During this operation the 1st Air Brigade attacked Chungking, Tzeliutsing as well as important areas in north China using Ani airfield while the 3rd Air Brigade attacked ships on the Yangtze River from Kingmen airfield and strategic areas in central China from bases at Hankou and Wuchang...
Although the results obtained during this operation were regarded as satisfactory, on 12 September it was necessary to halt the operation in order to prepare for the Pacific Area Operations."

While the 12 Sentai was under the 1st Air Brigade, the 27 Sentai is not mentioned under any of the two brigades.
The "Sonias" are getting ready for take-off. Note the blotches camouflage.

A 27 Sentai "Sonia", showing the tail marking of the 1st Chutai, indicated by the slanted white band on the tail.

In this "Sonia" the slanted line is not clearly visible suggesting that it's probably in red. An indication that this particular aircraft belonged to the 2nd Chutai.

The nose machine gunner of this "Sally" is climbing in his position.

A 12 Sentai Ki-21 Model II Koh "Sally" belonging to the 2nd Chutai. Note the complete absence of camouflage and no fuselage hinomaru. The aircraft is finished in overall hairyokushoku.

Mitsubishi Ki-51 "Sonia" - modelling options #7 - Shimbutai

In this post we will deal with some of the "Sonias" of the various tokkotai or shimbutai (special attack units) and the decal options for them.

But first, let's see a video from the NHK collection with release date (important) April 5, 1945.

According to the narrator:
"Our enemy, the United States, which invaded Iwo Jima, has been approaching our strategic point, the Nansei Islands, with all its might since March 23, and finally partly to the Kerama Islands on March 25. Furthermore, the main force came to land on the main island of Okinawa on April 1.
The enemy combined fleet has been spotted! Here, at the front line air base of our army, the "deadly spirit" is everywhere. In response to this good news (that the enemy was spotted), our kamikaze unit immediately launched. Only 600 km from the southern tip of Kyushu. Our strategic base, Nansei Islands. Will we leave this to the enemy? (If we leave it to the enemy) Land and sea supply routes as well as supply routes to the south areas will be totally threatened. Therefore, the enemy's plans should be canceled. Young warriors laughing brightly, holding the hands of their comrades.
One after another, splendid takeoffs. They shake their wings to say goodbye to their country forever."

The only "Sonia" equipped tokko unit that had flown prior to that date was the 23 Shimbutai. The unit was organized on February 14, 1945, from the Shimoshizu Training Air Division and was initially based at Choshi, Chiba Prefecture, equipped with 12 "Sonias" modified for tokko missions. After completing training the unit relocated to Chiran, Kagoshima Prefecture. On April 1, five "Sonias" lead by Captain Itsui attacked the US Forces south of Kerama Islands. Two days later, the last five "Sonias" of the unit attacked west of Okinawa never to be seen again.
In the photo below Capt. Itsui is standing in front of his "Sonia". The kanji read "shimbu" but the bird above is a golden rooster. According to Japanese mythology, this heavenly bird leads the world roosters to crowing every morning, forcing the oni (demons) of the night to run away.
The illustration below, is from Model Art #451.
Decals for this aircraft in 1/48 can be found in the Create 301 set "Special Attack Squadrons" released with the help of Nagao Keishiro of Lifelike decals.

According to the narator, the video is purported to show tokko aircraft taking off on a final mission. As we can see, though, none of the aircraft carries any bombs and none carries the tail marking of the 23 Shimbutai. So, what's going on here? Let's see stills of the aircraft seen in the video.
First we see a line-up of Manshu Ki-79 single-seat trainers with the wheel spads removed. The aircraft in the foreground on the left seems to have had its rudder replaced but the other in the background have a tail marking that looks like a bomb. Very similar to the tail marking of the 76 Shimbutai, equipped with "Nates" but the video is too blury to be 100% sure.
Another Manshyu Ki-79 taking off. No tail marking visible.

The most interesting "Sonia" above has a tail marking of an unknown unit. It has a bomb rack under the fuselage but a drop tank instead of a bomb. Same with the different "Sonia" below.

The aircraft below could be a Nakajima Ki-27 "Nate" and had an unusual white marking on the tail top. No landing gear covers.

And finally, one more Manshyu Ki-79, without tail marking and landing gear covers.

The majority of the tokko units that were organized at the front, like the Philippines, were hastily put together and their aircraft did not carry any special tail markings. An example is the "Sonia" below taking off from an airfield in the Philippines. Note the huge bomb, the lack of tail marking and the absence of rear gunner.
Those tokko units that were organized in Japan mainland, Korea and Manchuria, were formed from aviation schools or combat units, much  like the 23 Shimbutai we saw above. These remained in their "parent" units and airfields until they received orders to deploy, in which case they flew to Chiran (mostly) where they were bombed up before flying to their final tokko missions against Okinawa, for example. These tokko units were not under the constant pressure of the front, and had some time to design and apply elaborate tail markings, mostly for morale boosting reasons. In most clips showing farewell ceremonies of tokko units, the aircraft are without bombs. This means the clips were taken at the airfields of the "parent" units. The vast majority of clips showing bombed up tokko aircraft were taken in the Philippines.
So, what we see in the video above are such aircraft of a tokko unit (or units), based somewhere in Japan. They are taking off to fly to Chiran where they will have bombs attached and then fly to their final missions. Why the Manshu Ki-79 don't have any tail markings? Because they arrived from Manchuria only a few days before departure and there was no time to apply tail markings to all of them.

Another tokko unit equipped with "Sonias" was the "Sekichou-tai". As Nagao-san explains, the unit was organized on November 6, 1944, from the Shimoshizu Training Air Division. All members of the 3rd Training Flying Unit joined this Special Attack Unit, bringing its complement to 18. The unit moved to Delcaremen Air Base on November 16 and was officially named "Sekichou-tai." On December 5, seven Sonias led by Capt. Takaishi attacked enemy forces in Surigao Straits. By January 8, 1945, 17 Sonias - with their crews - had perished in attacks.
Below is a photo of one of the Sekichou-tai aircraft.
And artwork from Model Art #451.
Decals for this aircraft can be found again in the Create 301 set and also in one of the Wingsy "Sonia" kits (check older post).

Ofcourse you can built models of these aircraft without any bomb racks under their belly (the special modification for tokko missions), similar to the artwork above, but then they would just look like "normal" Sonias"...
We hope you found this series to your interest.
